WINNING DESIGN: TEMASEK GALLERY
Temasek Polytechnic | August 2018
To be completed in 2020
In Collaboration with ADDP Architects and
The Temasek Polytechnic Library Board
The Temasek Gallery is a project that was designed in which form and function work hand in hand with one another to create a unique modular space. The space consists of a multi-purpose room, which serves as a meeting room and lecture space, separated by a retractable wall.
Other spaces include a Lounge area, Pantry, central amphitheatre type pavilion and a exhibition space.
Flowing in a single direction, the form not only meet the functional needs of each space, but also acts as a spatial navigator for users to follow from one end of the level to the other. The wooden blades also serve as an acoustic surface for sound to be trapped, hence reducing reverberations and echoes. The curvilinear lines was inspired by the way Temasek Polytechnic's Architect, James Stirling, using curvilinear lines as a focal part of his postmodern design language.

WALK THROUGH VIDEO

Inspired by james stirling’s use of curvilinear grids that is synonymous in his design language, light and airy curvilinear forms work in tandem with each specific function required within each space.
These linear forms create a sense of seamless fluidity throughout each of the programmes and aid in a better understanding of circulation. The design also adopts certain principles of the postmodern architectural style, with its use of forms inspired by the surrounding landscape and structural milestones of the past.
A pleasing design that is uniquely temasek is achieved as a result, while implementing a cornucopia of innovative solutions at the same time. The simple and affordable materials used create a minimalistic, neutral and contemporary ambience that is easy on the eye while also placing emphasis on the artifacts on display.
